"What is the probability that the net suffering by somebody's relatives will be less with a war than containment?

If your sister were being held and tortured by a savage terrorist would you want me to try to free her. I would if there was any chance of success. If it would take ten of us to accomplish the job I would feel better about it. If we knew that 5 of us would likely be killed in the process, I would still be willing to go. Most freedom loving people would fight and risk harm to stop such injustice. The net gain of standing against injustice regardless of the odds is 100%.

"Acting like this war is a blemish-free cure-all is not rational."

I agree, which is why it requires bravery to even think about it.
