Israel and the US did all they could to trigger and sustain the Iran/Iraq war IMHO. US allies Kuwait and Saudi Arabia supplied massive financial aid to Iraq since Iran was then seen as the primary enemy. Israel provided covert help to Iran. Iran and Iraq both suffered enormously during that war. This was like the policy Harry Truman suggested the US follow soon after the German invasion of Russia in 1941 -- If the Germans are winning let's help the Russians; if the Russians are winning let's help the Germans. That way they can kill as many as possible.
