At this point my prediction is that those American troops leaving Germany for the Gulf will not return to Germany. If they return to Europe at all, it will be to new bases in Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic and Bulgaria.

I have no information on how many US troops left Germany for Iraq. I would be surprised if the forces dropped from the current 72,000 to below 50,000. With the NATO extension to the east some units are obviously no longer useful in Germany whereas others might even gain significance (airbases, special forces). In spite of the current heated atmosphere I don't believe there is a lasting damage in trans-Atlantic relations. In the 80ies the opposition to Reagan was maybe stronger than to Bush now, just remember the accidental recording of his microphone test / announcement that the bombing of the Soviet Union would start immediately. By now such episodes are nearly forgotten. We will have similar fond memories of current events.

Nadine...Have you heard of any report that talks about what papers were found in the house the Israeli's raided in Palestine a few months ago? Specific papers that link Al-Qaeda and Iraq....and possibly others? Fox, CNN, or MSMBC had a bit about that, but I came into the room too late to hear ...

Looks like you are right. The following WELT article speculates that only one tank brigade might remain in Germany. This would reduce the size of US Forces in Germany from 70,000 to 10,000.

US-Streitkräfte wollen größtenteils abwandern
Offenbar bleibt nur noch eine Panzerbrigade in Deutschland stationiert. Vor allem Standort Heidelberg betroffen
