The main reason that the US has not been more stern with Saudi Arabia is that the Saudi royal family likes us more than the Saudi public.

Daves: I think the Saudi royal family is between a rock and a hard place. They allowed those fanatical clerics free hand in an effort to preserve their power in office and now they themselves are in danger of losing their power. Personally, having observed the other CULT governments in the area and in Afghanistan, there is little doubt in my mind that the people will suffer MORE under the clerics then under the royal family. If SOMEHOW a Democratic govt similar to Great Britian could be established I would think that would be best of all for the people and the family. The Clerics will fight that tooth and nail though. jdn
