War on Iraq has been reported as a done deal, but the emergence of a thoughtful response to this historic challenge is just building... many anti-war types would consider this great news. i consider it an ominous one. if support for war is receding, and opposition mounting, surely you must understand: 1) this is not good for bush. it is too late to turn back now. he can't back away from a war, he is too far gone with his bellicose blustering. he could not survive the hit to his credibility. 2) this can't be good for israel. they need to inflame arab hostility against america so we will fight israel's wars for them. if arabs aren't mad at the united states, they will focus their hostility against israel. if the united states is not escalating a war with the arabs (fighting our war on terrorism), israel lacks the political and moral cover for their war on the palestinians. of course iraq is an avowed enemy of israel and they wish for the united states to emasculate iraq. 3) this can't be good for bin laden. he doesn't want peace, what good would that do him? he wants an all out clash of civilizations so the united states will grow tired of terrorism and extricate ourselves from the middle east. he is banking on the give up and go home attitude that colonial powers have chosen in the past when faced with endless terrorism. he wants a war with iraq so bush is focused on saddam and not as much on al qaeda. it's in his best interest to deflect our military away from him to focus on iraq. so if no war in iraq is bad for bush, israel, and bin laden...what is the most frightening conclusion? another major terrorist attack in the very near future. it would serve the interests of all three. if the american people are starting to cool to the prospects of war, there is one sure way to stir them up. another major terrorist attack. you have another major terrorist attack in the united states and the public will be clamoring for war. that's why if we see the anti-war movement gaining strength and the possibility of war receding, i become even more worried about an imminent terrorist attack. we can't trust our government, the israelis, or bin laden. one of them will hatch up (or at the very least allow) another terrorist event to further their goals for war.
