Gold would be a perfect vehicle, except that the same government that desires to control fiat controls a lot of gold too. Even if it gets up there eventually, it's the perfect target for the kind of manipulation that could shake off most small investors like fleas and starve the rest off real blood for a long time.

I'd be the biggest goldbug here except that one of the big lessons of the tech boom was that good investments and story stocks both got swept up in the storm until the story mattered more than the stocks. It sort of sounds like that here sometimes when we talk about gold.
