Why shouldn't the French feel a bit of heat over their relationship with Saddam??

Sure, as soon as you come within a mile of arguing the commercial relationship of French with Saddam was more damning than that of the US :-)

Oh now I see you mean for "supporting Saddam NOW"?

Sorry but this is not about supporting Saddam. This is about maintaining a world order where the weak does not get trampled under the feet of the strong, where international agreement rules rather than might. This is about resisting the only superpower left on earth who seems rampant on a rage, hell-bent on invading countries, taking oil, toppling governments and undermining international treaties like the International Criminal Court that it does not like, etc.

The French are not "supporting Saddam". Just like demanding that a rapist be put through trial rather than lynched by an angry mob along with his family is not "supporting a rapist".
