Nigeria Oil Workers Strike Expands to Blue Collar Workers By Vincent Nwanma LAGOS (Dow Jones) - Nigeria's oil workers strike expanded Tuesday as blue collar workers joined striking executives at the Department of Petroleum Resources, Belema Oshibodu, spokeswoman for the DPR, told Dow Jones Newswires. Blue collar workers of the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Nupeng, have joined members of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigerian, Pengassan, who have been striking since Saturday over pay and working conditions. So far there has been no disruption to crude oil loading at export terminals, and the DPR has sent management staff in to take over jobs abandoned by the striking workers, Oshibodu said. Oshibodu said the extension of the strike to Nupeng wouldn't significantly affect the DPR's operations as Nupeng members account for only 10% of the department's work force. Pengassan members make up 80% of the department's staff, and management the other 10%, Oshibodu said. However, Paul Ekele, leader of the senior workers at DPR, insisted the strike is affecting exports of Nigeria's crude and said the strike is being deliberately downplayed. "The management of DPR and the government are trying to cover up," he said. He said the management staff drafted by the DPR to the export terminals lack the technical expertise to undertake crude oil analysis. This, he said, has created a loophole that oil companies would exploit. A meeting between the DPR and Pengassan to secure a truce between the two groups is scheduled for Wednesday, a day later than originally proposed to give all members time to travel to Lagos.
