The explorers always said how "helpful" they were. In Aleut culture, being "helpful" can be taken to mean (by implication) that you are unable to take care of yourself.

It can be treacherous trying to help, whether you're trying to help your elderly father or another country. Good intentions and good works don't necessarily bring good PR. And, as we have seen with our own nanny state, it often breeds nonconstructive behaviors.

If we are going to help the poor and downtrodden of the world and do so in pursuit of our enlightened self interest, the best thing we can do is provide birth control. Unfortunately, that's not in favor in high places in Washington.

In many parts of the world it has become synonymous with proselytizing.
