so... this walmart news is interesting. Walmart much higher profits on intl sales. But this article makes it look like sheer cost cutting on B2B intl sourcing that caused the rise in profits... if so why just this quarter? Without this detail I would have assumed the lower dollar did the trick, just like in early 90s.

Wal-Mart Profit Up, Gains Abroad Help

The profit gains come even as sales growth slows in a U.S. economy worried about a possible war in Iraq and job cuts. Consumer sentiment has dropped to near-decade lows, keeping spending in check.

Analysts pointed to cost cuts from a global purchasing operation put in place last year that allows Wal-Mart to use its massive size to buy products cheaper for its more than 4,700 stores around the world.

"Product acquisition costs are falling faster than our prices at the register," said Mark Miller, a retail analyst with William Blair, who rates the shares "outperform."

One thing is for sure- companies are really getting cleaned up in this recession, the profit picture has really improved for the big guys. Its great when a big company can show bottom line gains thanks to technology, too.
