Openwave Systems unveiled Phone Tools Version 7.0, the latest upgrade to its core wireless browser technology. The upgrade includes an XHTML browser, messaging client and other components. Openwave also is showing the sixth generation of its Mobile Access Gateway, and says Cingular Wireless plans to deploy it.

Nokia and Texas Instruments announced an extension of their relationship, with TI saying it will optimize execution of Nokia's Series 60 mobile platform on its own OMAP application processors and platform. The companies were demonstrating a prototype device resulting from the collaboration, featuring a color screen, keypad and other Series 60 smartphone components.
The announcement was one of several major deals from Nokia. The company also unveiled an initiative with Oracle to offer enable that company's Collaboration Suite on Nokia phones as part of a campaign to sell mobility solutions to enterprises. Customer trials will begin in the second quarter, initially in the United Kingdom.

Nokia also disclosed an agreement with Sun Microsystems, which will resell the Nokia Delivery Server as part of its new Data Service Delivery Framework for wireless service providers deploying digital content delivery. And Nokia demonstrated a variety of enterprise wireless solutions created in conjunction with IBM, including IBM's Wireless Enterprise Delivery Environment e-business reference framework.

Texas Instruments at 3GSM World Congress unveiled four new GSM/GPRS chipsets aimed at an array of phone market segments. TI also announced an initiative to work with Network Associates to provide a wireless security solution for OMAP application processors used for 2.5G and 3G handhelds.

Motorola says its Glocal Telecom Solutions Sector successfully has completed simultaneous voice and data calls on the company's A830 UMTS handsets during drive testing for an unnamed, major global wireless service provider. The test included soft handover, softer handover and power control.
Motorola also says its Semiconductor Products Sector has made what it claims is the industry's first live over the air call on its fully integrated wireless handset platform, called i.300.

Siemens's Information and Communication Mobile Group today outlined its mobile data strategy, focused on the growth areas of messaging; entertainment; mobile payment; location services and multimedia services.

Lucent Technologies and Novatel Wireless introduced their new Merlin U530 PC card modem for high-speed data connectivity over UMTS networks.

Qualcomm says it has slated the first technology trial of its GSM1x technology, with China Unicom. The test will enable the carrier's GSM subscribers to use the high-speed data capabilities of China Unicom's CDMA2000 1XRTT network. Initial tests will focus on use of dual-mode GSM/CDMA2000 1XRTT handsets, with later tests to include roaming between CDMA and GSM networks.

Qualcomm also announced what it calls the first global positioning system position location sessions over live GSM networks in the United States and Europe. The tests used Qualcomm's MGP6200 multimode GPS chips.

At 3GSM, Sony Ericsson unveiled its new 3G smartphone, the Z1010 dual mode handset for UMTS/GSM/GPRS networks. The clamshell-design phone includes an integrated camera that can capture video or still images, with e-mail and multimedia messaging service capabilities.
Sony Ericsson also introduced a laptop computer EDGE card for 850/1900 MHz GSM networks in North America. AT&T Wireless plans to offer the card, initially.
