France was trounced by Germany (read: Surrendered, lost the battle). There is nothing in the history books that would confirm your fantasy that they "fought the Germans to a standstill." Geez!

France was occupied by the Germans in WWII, not WWI. The trench warfare that typified the war took place in the fields of northern France and the Low Countries, and that's as far as it went. The Germans never even reached Paris.
