Hutch delays Italian 3G launch

February 20, 2003

HUTCHISON Whampoa's Italian unit H3G has delayed the commercial launch of its third-generation mobile telecommunications services to early March.

In January, the Hong Kong-based group had indicated H3G planned to distribute 30,000 terminals to Italian shops in the middle of February for the commercial launch of services.

On Wednesday the spokesman said: `"Terminals will be in the shops in the first week of March. There is a small slippage to ensure there is the best quality. Two weeks is not important."

The company has delayed the UMTS launch several times from an initial roll-out planned for the second half of 2002.

Universal Mobile Telecommunications System - also known as third-generation or 3G - is designed to provide e-mail, high-speed Internet surfing and live sound and image broadcasts to compatible handsets.

The first batch of UMTS terminals could number more than 30,000, the spokesman said, noting these will not be available before March 3.

Terminals are already starting to be delivered to more than 300 selected clients, who have begun using the services on H3G's commercial network, he said.

"These VIPs have started using the commercial network. The other commercial customers will do so in March," the spokesman said.

Reliability of the video call service is over 90 percent, he said, against 85 po 90 per cent in January.

Commercial bookings are more than 130,000 and H3G should have 200,000 customers at the end of April.

Network coverage will start at 40 per cent of the population, and rise to more than 60 per cent by the end of 2003, and to 85 per cent at end of 2004, the spokesman said.
