Chapq, Re: the EMC data release “Latin American operators are overwhelmingly turning to GSM in order to upgrade their TDMA infrastructures,. Of the 42 Latin American operators that have announced migration strategies, over 80 per cent have opted for GSM".<<<

How does that statement square with Tony’s London Day chart ? which stated-

5 carriers make of 90% of the TDMA market, 3 of the 5 are converting to CDMA2000 1X

Could there be a little GSM hype in that article? Could the GSM folks be conveniently overstating their “success” by counting operators rather than subscribers?

The Joint Venture Between Telefonica Moviles and Portugal Telecom Hosts Successful Inaugural BREW(TM) Developers Conference in Brazil

SAO PAULO, Brazil, Mar 10, 2003 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ --
QUALCOMM Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless technology, and the Joint Venture between Telefonica Moviles and Portugal Telecom (Joint Venture), today announced the successful conclusion of the first BREW Developers Conference in Latin America, held in Sao Paulo. The conference was structured to provide Brazilian application developers with insights on how to benefit from QUALCOMM's complete BREW solution and information about the Joint Venture's upcoming plans to launch BREW-based data application services.

'We are excited that Brazilian application developers have expressed enthusiasm for the BREW solution, and we anticipate a successful commercial launch of our BREW-based application service,'said Luis Avelar, vice president of IT and Products and Services Engineering for the Joint Venture between Telefonica Moviles and Portugal Telecom. 'With the support of developers and device manufacturers, our subscribers will enjoy a compelling applications service that will be the benchmark for innovative wireless data services in Latin America.'

'QUALCOMM looks forward to the growth of Brazil's developer community and the variety of BREW applications that will get the Joint Venture's subscribers excited about having BREW-enabled handsets,'said Peggy Johnson, president of QUALCOMM Internet Services. 'The overwhelming energy at the inaugural Latin America BREW Developers Conference was evidence of the shared optimism among developers and the Joint Venture about the wireless ecosystem they are creating together.'

The conference featured presentations from the Joint Venture and QUALCOMM, aimed at giving developers guidance in creating BREW-enabled applications for the wireless operators of Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. The Joint Venture will be the first wireless operator in Latin America to offer a BREW-based application service. Since April 2002, when the first BREW Developer Lab opened in Sao Paulo, wireless application developers in Brazil have gained valuable hands-on experience with the BREW platform and BREW-enabled handsets.

Deployments of the BREW solution continue as operators throughout the world join Verizon Wireless and ALLTEL in the United States, KTF in South Korea, KDDI in Japan, and China Unicom in commercializing BREW-based services. More than 40 BREW-enabled handset models have been offered to consumers worldwide and more than 40 device manufacturers have indicated their interest in the BREW platform.

QUALCOMM's BREW platform is a thin application execution environment that provides an open, standard platform for wireless devices. The BREW platform is part of a complete, end-to-end solution for wireless applications development, device configuration, application distribution, and billing and payment. The complete BREW solution includes the BREW SDK(TM) (software development kit) for developers, the BREW applications platform and porting tools for device manufacturers, and the BREW Distribution System (BDS) that is controlled and managed by operators -- enabling them to easily get applications from developers to market and coordinate the billing and payment process. Operators'BREW-based services will enable consumers to customize their handsets by downloading applications over the air from an operator's application download server. The BREW platform is a product of QUALCOMM Internet Services (QIS), a division within the QUALCOMM Wireless &Internet (QWI) Group of QUALCOMM Incorporated.
