Interesting article i posted over on the other thread comparing Bob Byrd of today with Bob Taft of 1940. Similarities are striking. Source is NY Post op ed.

There is definitely the oil concerns - French companies hold certain contracts which they will no doubt have to turn over to the US companies after an invasion.

However, it is quite incorrect to say the French position is "all about oil" - at least French government's position is in line with its public opinion (more than 80% say "NO" without UN backing, more than 30% sat "NO" even with UN) which is more than one can say about the UK, Spain, etc.
