The MotherJones article gives an accurate portrayal of the disconnect between the Arab people and the regimes that rule them. In Egypt, demonstrations are banned under the state of emergency laws that have been imposed continuously since 1981. In Saudi Arabia, demonstrations are banned; period. In other Arab countries, demonstrators are arrested en masse, tortured and and jailed without trial for long periods. Is it any wonder why the Iraqi people and the Iraqi army will not fight the US invasion? No one will shed any tears over the removal of Saddam from power, but it would have been better for the Iraqis and all Arabs in fact if the Iraqi masses had removed him themselves.

This Robert Fisk article quoted in the MotherJones article is thing of beauty.

Robert Fisk: A million march in London but, faced with disaster, the Arabs are like mice.
