When the president of the US makes a decision I think he should value the lives of Americans more highly then the lives of others.

I agree with that. OTOH, I have an otherwise rational friend who would kill off every single Iraqi rather than risk one American life. That's way, way over the top, but I do think one American life should weigh more than one Iraqi life, all things being equal, to the President.

In any case a reasonable argument can be made that more years of Saddam + sanctions will cause more death and suffering then an invasion.

I agree with that, too. If you just weigh Saddam + sanctions against the invasion itself. If you bring in worldwide repercussions from the invasion, unintended consequences, I'm not so sanguine.
