That's why his testimony earlier this week in front of the Congressional budget committee was a clear condemnation of U.S. President George W. Bush's economic stimulus plan. Mr. Greenspan disagreed that tax cuts would not overinflate the the federal budget deficit and also disagreed with Bush officials, who say deficits would have little effect on long-term interest rates.

Mr. Bush responded by calling on the public to bug their Congressman to vote in favour of his plan. He also called upon his allies in Congress, who denounced Mr. Greenspan, and U.S. Treasury Secretary John Snow, who tried to smooth things yesterday in saying, "I don't think we're at loggerheads at all." Then Ari Fleisher, U.S. White House spokesperson, said the President has "a great deal of confidence" in Mr. Greenspan.
