<Putin will be on our side in the end>

But he should be on our side, now. Russia is fighting a series of endless wars against Islamic insurgencies in the Caucusus and Central Asia. Their main threat is to their South, not West. Even the Chinese present less of a threat (at least short-term) than the Muslims do. There have been spectacular attacks against civilians inside Russia, by Muslim terrorists. Russia is another natural ally who is NotOnBoard, because of our failed diplomacy.

There is a very real possibility, that we go into Iraq alone:

The Turk's price for support may be too high, and there is very little time left to reach agreement. Or, the Turks might have decided all along, that they would agree in principle, but then present us with conditions we couldn't meet.

The British are waffling about whether they'll send troops without a new Security Council resolution. And Bush hasn't yet lined up enough votes there.

I can't decide what would be worse: backing down now, or going in alone.
