-- Nortel says '03 mobile network mkt may drop 10 pct --

CANNES, France, Feb 19 (Reuters) - Nortel Networks <NO.TO>
said a price war in wireless equipment could cause the entire
market to fall by 10 percent in 2003, slightly revising an
earlier forecast that the market would decline in single digits.
"In 2002 the market was estimated at $40 billion. It can be
down on average 10 percent," Pascal Debon, head of Nortel's
wireless network activities said when asked how he expected
sales to develop in 2003.
"This is because prices are going down; there is a price
war," he said in the fringes of 3GSM, a wireless trade show.
He added that some mobile network equipment may halve over
the next three years.
He added that its clients, the mobile carriers, wanted to
see a success story before they would invest heavily in new,
fast wireless networks for voice and mobile Internet.
"They tell us what we need is proof that the application
services market is there. People are waiting for one carrier to
show the way. The attitude is don't dream. Show me the money,"
he said.
