The thesis of this article is wrong: it's not about oil. The US's reliance on Middle Eastern oil has been decreasing over the years as new resources are found elsewhere. If there was not one more drop of oil from that part of the world then Canada and the US would obviously be hurt, but they would not be crippled. The oil shales in Alberta contain enough oil for the next few centuries, though extracting it is more expensive than just piping it out of the ground. Venezuela, though unstable at present, is a big supplier, as is Canada (without the oil shales), Mexico and internal sources within the US.

To my mind Saddam is an icon of instability in the region and is an ever present threat to his neighbours. His weapons programs will provide a ready source of devices for terrorists, and that alone cannot be tolerated. He has single-handedly undermined the credibility and power of the UN, which is why that lunatic in North Korea appears to have lost his bottle of "happy pills", and feels that he can now also snub the UN (re: "Useless Nincompoops").

The peace nicks have also got it wrong. Perhaps they would be happier in fundamentalist Islamic states under the control of thugs - if so - they can say goodbye to their freedom of expression.

War is never an event to be taken likely, but for some, force is all that some people appear to understand. War stopped the Nazi's and the Japanese; while the US economy and its technology drove the Soviet economy into the ground via President Reagan. A combination of both will stop the terrorists.

David.
