FOMA For More (coverage)

(20/02/2003, BWCS Staff) NTT DoCoMo announced today that it is much nearer to its goal of nationwide coverage for its FOMA 3G service. From 22nd February it will be able to offer 3G services to 97% of the populated areas of the crucial Kanto Koshinetsu region. This will boost its national coverage to 89% of the Japanese population.

The increased availability of FOMA in the districts of Tokyo, Kanagawa, Chiba, Saitama, Ibaraki, Tochigi and Niigata will bring DoCoMo closer to its stated goal of achieving 91% population coverage by the end of March 2003. The operator, which has been criticised in the past for the slow rollout of its 3G service, said it also plans to boost 3G access in buildings in these areas.

DoCoMo is adding a further 400 base stations in the Kanto Koshinetsu region, bringing the number to 2,200. By the end of March 2004, NTT DoCoMo is aiming to have the same number of 3G base stations as PDC (800MHz) base stations, which currently stand at some 2,600.

But what capacity can FOMA provide with this coverage?

What tiny fraction of its PDC capacity?

And what performance at what capacity?

How quickly would FOMA's present performance plummet if it ever did attract users - if the network wasn't empty?
