LB & Rascal:

On this assured China thing - I don't think its a given.

India in many ways is in a better position, but they seem completely hobbled by the bureaucracy. China is a command economy seeking to become entrepreneurial. Any of a number of things could go wrong and it would collapse like a house of cards (aka Russia).

I seem to remember a lot of press about how great Japan was and we would be eating their dust (15 to 20 years back). Now look where they are.

Command economies fail - period.

While China is on the right track today - I could see it being supplanted by India or at least rivaled by it.

Or maybe all India's brightest will continue to move here and keep us on the leading edge :-)
