David, <Social Security is nothing more than a giant Ponzi (pyramid) scheme. As such, it was never actuarily sound, even from its earliest days.>

What I learned in school was that with Social Security, the government takes part of your paycheck, puts it away until your retirement, then pays that money back to you as retirement benefits.

Of course, reality struck and I later learned what a myth that was. Now it's just a handout program, the Ponzi scheme that you correctly point out, but no politician has the courage to.

Of course, the point of an actuarily sound plan is to benefit the insurance company and provide it with a profit. Social Security was established to benefit people in need.

>But it is broke, has been for 25 years, and cannot be fixed.

So institute a new system... do you have any better ideas?
