Legislative enactments and court decisions are not only a matter of adjudicating rights, they are a way of making public policy. When, for example, we establish the onus on the prosecution in a criminal trial, or allow the Supreme Court to promulgate Miranda standards, we are saying that a the effort to avoid wrongful conviction is more important to us than public safety, for example. When we require the concurrence of both houses of Congress, plus presidential ratification or super majorities, to enact legislation, we are saying that full public debate and deliberation is more important, for most matters, than speedy action. In such a case, it is not merely a private exercise of conscience to establish protocols for assisted suicide. It is culture altering. I tried to express various ways in which that might be a bad thing, for example, by making it seem that those who show fortitude in the face of pain, misfortune, and incapacitation are suckers. Similarly, I fear that what started as an option to die will become a duty to die, so that one will leave a juicy inheritance and let everyone get on with their lives. I will not list all of the points, however........
