However, the Republican mood was not calculating so much as it was deeply distrustful of others.

One of the distinguishing characteristics for Conservatives is how that distrust manifests itself. For paleo-cons, the distrust results in isolationism, mild xenophobia and a general avoidance of "foreign entanglements". For the neo-cons, the distrust has led to the American hegemony plan.
