tejek,

re:The news report said it was the first time since 1983

Maybe since one crossed and returned. We have had defectors land in the South a few times and one of them was as recently as 1996. cnn.com The defection followed closely on the heels of an incursion into South Korea's coastal waters by five North Korean gunboats. The South Korean navy pursued the gunboats and chased them back north of the demarcation zone about 20 minutes after they arrived.

Last Friday, North Korean soldiers crossed into the South Korean side of the demilitarized zone, firing their weapons into the air. The soldiers retreated when South Korean patrols fired warning shots.

This month's incursions were the first since April, when the communist North announced that it would no longer adhere to the 43-year-old armistice signed following the Korean War. For three nights in April, North Korea sent armed soldiers into the neutral zone village Panmunjom, violating the DMZ created by the armistice.

Also, don't forget the two or is three submarines now that have crossed over.

Don't forget this is the kind of shit you do to check defenses before doing "something" - we know that. We do this all the time in Iraq to get them to light up their RADAR's and expose themselves. It's a big game (dangerous) but it's a game.

From the Korean Herald:
koreaherald.co.kr

In June last year, South and North Korean naval vessels fought a gunfight in the West Sea. Five South Korean sailors and an unidentified number of North Korean soldiers were killed during the battle.

In November, South Korean Navy forces fired warning shots at a North Korean patrol boat that violated the border.

PS: I'm telling those bastards are trying to ruin my weekend again. ;-)
