Oh I agree the GDP is not a very good statistic but for different reasons then you cite. The one that gets me is the business investment component. Then the government part is also a puzzle to me since it seems as though that should be counted as an expense.

Does anyone know what kind of percentage of that trade deficit is imported goods that are made by foreign subsidiaries of US multinationals who have chosen to move their manufacturing operations overseas? Consider that this has been happening for years and years. US companies moving manufacturing to Mexico, Taiwan and now China. You can sort of understand why the Chinese want our dollars since I can't imagine their other trading partners are real eager to take Yuan. Notice China moved ahead of Japan for the number one spot.
