Japanese 3G market breakthrough

Alcatel has not had a particularly high profile on the mobile scene of late and some questioned whether the French vendor remained a player. These fainthearts were confounded yesterday when Alcatel revealed that its UMTS technology was to be deployed by NTT DoCoMo.

The Japanese operator is migrating its Foma WCDMA network to be 3GPP R99 compliant and Alcatel is providing supplier Fujitsu with the appropriate technology. The vehicle for the technology transfer is the Evolium joint venture owned by the two companies. The JV is responsible for research, development and product strategy in all wireless areas including GSM, GPRS, EDGE and UMTS. Evolium does not do sales which are still handled by the individual partners. Fujitsu has supplied 35 per cent of the Node Bs and 65 per cent of the Radio Network Controllers in the Foma network and is well positioned to win a significant share of the migration business. Alcatel is also building a 3GPP interoperability platform in Japan for DoCoMo. The Foma migration is being undertaken because NTT DoCoMo rolled out their network using early standards.
