Weren't the Soviets in a hurry to take Berlin for political reasons? Might that haste have contributed to their losses?

That, and the fact that there were two generals competing for the honor...

There was some feeling that it would be nice to have Berlin by May 1.
As a partial offset, towards the end of the battle, some Soviet soldiers began to exhibit the "Do I really want to be the last one to die?" syndrome.
