They deploy GSM/EDGE in Greenfield spectrum.

GSM and EDGE in the 2100MHz band? I really try to listen to the engineers on this one, and it sounds like putting the towers close enough to make this work would also be sufficient to make WCDMA work, defining work as follows:

- About 3 times as spectrally efficient as GSM/GPRS, something less than 1x.

- Roughly same data rates as 1x.

- Higher prices than 1x on average, prior to resolution of the IPR cluster fu@#.

- Technology improvements on the handset side to make up for the 5MHz channel and the synch handoff.

I guess either way, this route looks pretty pitiful, but at least there is a road.
