Yes, it may happen in some sectors.

The bosses invested those USDbillions in IT and upon not seeing the increase in productivity decided to get this productivity one way another by just sacking people. The downturn provided the right opportunity.

There are other sectors, like the cushy jobs such as the airline industry which they don't want to change and go all the way to bankruptcy.

Then there are also those Chinese striking because their bosses had cut overtime!!
