Anyone who can look at the situation and say with a straight face "the inspections are working" - which even the amiable Mr. Blix does not claim - is indulging in wishful thinking of the worst kind.

Actually, I think we are now moving toward a tougher, better-defined sort of inspection that just might work, after all.

Blix' giving definite dates for concrete corrective actions is a positive step.

The key is that the consequences for non-compliance should steadily become more severe, as is happening now, with invasion as the last resort.

(This, of course, presumes that the Bushies will be satisfied with only disarmament, which is probably not realistic).
