Weak. And even if the "outside world" does not, we are admittedly unafraid of unilateral action


Not weak - history. By 1994 it was perfectly clear that Saddam had learned how to hide his weapons programs and was cheating, but the UN and our allies didn't want to hear about it, they just wanted to undermine the sanctions by trading with Saddam. Our good buddy France was one of the leaders at this game.

And UN inspectors rifling through the palace linen closets lends itself to dignity?

But I thought you for a beefed up coercive inspections regime? As you just pointed out, the thing is not tenable. The inspectors would only get thrown out again. Which leads to the inevitable conclusion - if you actually want to disarm Iraq, you MUST get rid of the present regime. Nothing less will do the trick.
