A big problem for democrats is that they are an activist party. As they achieve their agenda their goals move farther and farther to the left. This can only result in their goals becoming progressively less desirable for mainstream Americans.

Clinton gave us the best economy ever and peace on earth.
It was the Ken Starr gang who dragged him (and all of us) down. That was entirely for political purposes and it worked at a large degree, though Clinton left office with 60% approval ratings and still could have beaten Bush if a third term were possible. His one big flaw was a personal one. Everyone has personal flaws. Yes he was stupid and selfish with his affair(s), he should have known they'd catch him somewhere, sometime. But even that "sin" did not cost tax-payers a dime, he was cleared of all Whitewater charges, Starr sent the innocent McDougal lady to prison for 18 months because she wouldn't repeat their lies in court and basically it was an ugly character assasination. Clinton deserved a lot better despite his personal flaw.
That said, Clinton is in the past now. Bush actually operates a lot like Clintin politically (and then some) and look at the mess we have now in the world and in our country. Bush can no longer blame that on Clinton or Osama. The buck stops at his desk. That's Harry Truman, and Bush sure is no Harry Truman. More like Herbert Hoover trying to pose as Ronald Reagan. Telling us prosperity is right around the corner and talking about "evil" empires, etc. When in fact to much of the world, Bush is making us look like the evil empire. A reminder of the way they felt about us during the Vietnam War years. In the end though it will be the economy, stupid. Bush will lose because of this, and deserves to. He has squandered America's prosperity and deserves much of the blame personally.
