Why on earth would they want to buy equipment to do W-CDMA in 2GHz UMTS frequency which will cost 5% more than cdma2000, do a worse job [as shown by D'oh!CoMo's FOMA network], and because it's in higher frequency, get a lot worse coverage or have to have base stations packed a lot closer than a 900MHz cdma2000 network?

Because, if they are European, they have either paid for the spectrum or are on the hook for it. And it's a time honored European tradition to throw good money after bad.

< "A year ago, people were saying GSM has 80 percent of the market so WCMDA will have 80 percent of the market," Thornley said, adding that many realize that is no longer the case. Thornly did acknowledge that as WCDMA deployments take off, it may eventually outpace CDMA2000.

Thornley is just making nice. Doesn't hurt to take the edge off a bad reputation, even if undeserved.

They key is MMS--Multi Moron Syndrome--not Multi Media Messaging as you might think. Like tulip fanciers, the European crowd got all hot and bothered, overbid on 3G spectrum in a fit of mass hysteria, and now has to justify its lack of lucidity somehow. This is where Nokia's pipe dream of combining voice and data helps. Since it will take forever to perfect, it can be ballyhooed as "that next technology over the horizon that will change human existence dramatically." The duped carriers who cannot afford to be recognized as the dupees (though they know so all too well), can go along with this nonsense while Nokia, et al, try endlessly to perfect it.

Everybody is happy, Q gets ignored....same old story. Meanwhile, in the East, the Mongol hordes are assembling, whipping their ponies into fighting trim for an assault.

In other words, it takes a lot of morons to continue to give life to the notion that WCDMA and MMS will be the cat's pajamas. Hence, the MultiMoronSyndrome I have just baptized as a new form of pathology.

Those who oppose MMS as a pathology and are afflicted with it can simply say: "Just you wait, you'll see how wrong you are soon enough!"

My response, now that Q and all its ardent head-banging supporters recognize that a little diplomacy doesn't hurt is this: "My, my that MMS sure is a nifty thing, isn't it?"
