Conserve and TREES, a gold in my eye: I see no eveil, I see gold in many forms:
“…, A Tree – a low tree growing anew from the ground unshaded, unfretered, unsung by Joyce Kilmer. “
A LOW TREE I STILL SEE. By Charles ( Chucka ) Marsh (Top Paragraphs Only )
Years ago Cape Cod was devoid of “The Tall Trees” I just heard because of the shipbuilding industry of colonial times to create “The Tall Ships”. My late father, a writer of limericks and a dozen books; whom lived off and on at Cape Code for 20 some years before passing on a near decade ago. A few years befor he passed he wrote the captioned article I just scanned about the GROWTH of TREES ala Style of Joyce Kilmer. A different President, a same last name and when I grew up the wife of LBJ said the phrase, “plant a tree or a shrub – TODAY!” Why do I see a need for a balance, why do I need to understand the renewed growth of trees on Cape Cod these last few decades I have visited and seen the results. For three decades I had access to cameras , lately, video recorders and I took scenes in the 1980’s of Cape Cod from my dad’s house he bought some 19 years ago with a widow’s walk overlooking Nantucket Sound. I am amazed as I look at the panarama I took some 35 feet off the ground, only 30 degrees of water view remains now from the 90 degrees I saw then. Why? The Trees, The Growth Of The Tall Trees! He ( dad ) bought the house as he had a need to be near a side yard of trees, all young and small. I kept the house even though the same period I just built a house off Cape as I rented it out to a Barnstable Housing Authority client for a decade until we moved in a couple of years ago, and got a shock. The view we remembered as gone, yet, thanks be; the winter gives us a seasonal view back on both the first and second floors. But we lost a view due to the heights and breadths of the tall trees now a couple decades older and had grown a foot a year in tallness. In fill-in on grade the width of branches and trunks were 400% more now than in older pictures. So In Summer I went up to the widow’s walk and snapped some pictures. This is the dilemma of the current times, this is the balance we must conserve now.
The back deck has had a problem when we moved back in a it had four talls- choke cherry and 3 fast growing center rotted poplars that were at rates of the growth at 2 ft a year rather than one foot a year as with the Scrub Oaks and the Swamp Maples in the side yard. The side yard grove are the ones the wreck our views. So we called in the first few months we moved back in after we collected dead brush around the ground, the WRT Tree Company that cherry-picker plucked the rotted tress down the side and the cherry that was half falling down. But I did not choose to the have then cut the side yard trees down. But I knew then I wanted a Sounder View so I had them laddertree climb and pick out some branches that distorted the household summer views that in last Sundays’Real Estate section featured a house just 4 house away across the street for sale in the Cape Cod Times at over $2 million with ads I saw the prior weeks as a VIEW FROM EVERY ROOM, hence, I said to myself, it had a million dollar VIEW? But I paid a thousand dollars to WRT Tree that year past? But I saved some of the tress. Old Man Campbell across the street built that 2 million dollar house near a century ago at much less we must point out. The page one Real Estate Section last Sunday of the Cape Cod Times said young John Kennedy played there as that family decided to locate to HyPort years after renting that same house. Humme, that is JFK and I started this article with talk on his successors wife, LBJ. But WRT was the reason I lost my own million dollar view in the balance I choose. The fear and greed factor of home ownership and property stewardship must be learned to be grown in these times with a RESPONSIBILTY . That value attributed to the trunk of the land, balanced with a new root of evil, a monetary greed that might prevail if not self checked. Will I leave this land a better way? Will I cut it all down to make a MILLION DOLLAR VIEW? Well, will I, punk. What would Clint Eastwood …do. After-all a twist on a phrase and a board-foot measurement is even referenced within his name. I think Dirty Harry might not know that under all is the land. Just dirt. Trees …grown in dirt. After 50 weeks in the desert, I know dirt. After 5,000 acres of United States Department of Interior Bureau of Land Management lease rules I know one thing, as I gave them back a free 25 acres that they wanted to build a fire station that will be built this fiscal year, after all the danger of western forest fires-will Cape Cod have a similar need in some GROWTH IN OUR FUTURE? I think of these things, maybe I flew on 100 airline legs too long these past five years as I looked for the Mother Lode but found something more important as I daydreamed on the planes in the hours I wasted as I grew moss on the north side of my airline seat. What the heck-I did that staking in the Great Basin of the Southwest’s Wilderness for a group of buds I met on the Internet at the birth of Windows 95 and E Mail list creation. This actually lead to a Public Relations Business that had for its last client before the 2002 stock meltdown, Mariculture; a fish farm also called www.sargo.net. Soon, I will have to renew or non renew my old PR website, www.chuckaPublicRelations.com/june_23rd_2002_update.htm
As I only had a few client(s) on penny stock companies that I thought would give me stock I earned, worth DOLLARS ( many growth multiples). Alas but the growth was not to be, all my favorites were cut down in their prime. Fear and Greed, I still must remind myself that life is just a balance. A tree, sometimes; a trunk, and a little traveling music. I am growing. I am a tree, also. I am now a fish, now a song in stereo. A spice in vacuum packs, a secure data transmitter that can never be a Norton or McAffee. Even now it is still all balanced. I will see the tree. I will see the view. And I will smell the gifts of that tree and the world. I will hear what my father heard below. Will it be a chainsaw I hear? Or a tree?
Dads, last line requoted seems appro: “”..{{..? As Joyce Kilmer wrote, “Only God can make a tree,//..sic..//..as my Dad WROTE: -///sic…//- but any dope can make a stump, and there are so many more of them!..””..}} Whom is the dope? The one that makes the MILLION DOLLAR VIEW or the one who saves it? This is a story on the balance. Maybe the checks and the balances ?

End-Chucka Marshall

II) Think that I Shall Never See, A Tree....”

It is often a strange world, a contradictory world, a topsy— turvy world. This was obvious in October 1989. While President Bush took three days off to plant three trees, one in Wyoming, one in Idaho and one in Montana to help celebrate the centennials of these three states. The President, far from the White House, at taxpayers’ expense, traveling with a well—worn media team of television cameramen and reporters. He would doff his coat, loosen his tie, open his collar. grasp the spade and vigorous dig a hole sufficiently big for two strong men to set a tree in. Then he would make a short speech about the need and value o.f planting more trees as one sure way to save the environment. Trees, as he knew and pointed out, breathe I: the carbon dioxide and breathe out oxygen, essential for a balanced atmosphere.

While I was. watching this for the third time down the street frcm: my house, a neighbor was watching a crew of landscapers with chain saws, cherry pickers, axes and dump trucks who were cutting,

Uprooting, then carting away what I estimated to be ten or a dozen large, prime white pines. His purpose was to clear his land and have less shade, more sun on his property for the winter months.

What a contrast! The president of the United States traveling across the country to plant three trees, while close to home my neighbor destroyed a dozen trees. It would take a long tine for the President’s three puny saplings to breathe enough opxygen into the at— mosphere to balance my neighbors’s thoughtless destruction.

But as though this were not enough, on the other side of me, a couple of blocks away, another neighbor had cut down three large trees: two maples and a massive oak. The oak because he was infuriated over the large number of acorns dropped on his lawn by wind, squirrels and crows , disrupting the smooth contours of the lawn cutter. The three trees were cut down, he said, because he was sick and tired of having to rake the leaves each autumn. Why, one wondered, would a man with sc so little rapport with nature choose to live in a rural area rather than the heart rt of a city?

Obviously, these two men , affluent, educated, probably supporters of President Bush’s conservative politics of " no new taxes,” the capital tax—cut proposal, and such, might have been expected to have listened to their leader such, a: least have spared the trees, if they could not go out and plant one.

Isn’t this the weakness of the whole environmental agenda:

thoughtless, little, arrogant and selfish persons act from their own whims without regard for the life about them? Will enough of the people ever learn? “When will they ever learn, when will they ever learn? As Joyce Kilmer wrote, “Only God can make a tree, -- but any dope can make a stump, and there are so many more of them!

Platinum, palladium, silver and gold were produced along the trend and in this this area of the Goodsprings District area during the period 1914 to 1920. Reported production was approximately 400 ounces of platinum, 900 ounces of palladium, 1,800 ounces of gold, 7,000 ounces of silver and 570,000 pounds of copper.

Geologic mapping and sampling of the property were completed in and potential exploration targets have been ..//.. A detailed 143 rock-chip sample program along the structural zone and localized gossan-jasperoid zones showed results where approximately 50% of the samples were anomalous in PGM-precious metal geochemistry. Of the 143 samples, 44 were anomalous in platinum, 67 in palladium and 77 in gold.

The highest selected sample result was from the Oro Amigo claims and assayed 2.02 ounce-per-ton (opt) gold
