German companies have been buying up every water company/utility they can get their mitts on. I could easily invision "it" coming down to water rights.

China's in the middle of the largest public works project in the history of the world. South to North water canals to slake 300mm people. I saw an awesome PBS show on it. The displacement and enviro impact of this project is really astounding. Due to be done in 2050:
