Reagan's ideas are not right for today either. Back in the 80's there was Cold War. That was the over-riding concern of Reagan's foreign policy. Now we have no cold war at all just nationless shadows to chase. That's spook work not for huge armies. There was also a big government that could afford to be pared down. No more. Reagan's supply side tax cuts may have worked then but now they have the opposite effect, queering the markets, doing nothing for consumer confidence, slowly bankrupting the states and forcing even GOP governors to raise taxes. Add in the high oil-gas prices, more pollution, more paranoia and division, cuts in social services and our entire quality of life sinks. And keeps sinking. And that spreads all around the world.

Bush also plays tough by ignoring dissent, insulting those with better or more complex ideas, thereby harming the quality of the debate, creating a spin-sanity without real substance and creating the growing realisation that he the Emperor has no clothes. Soon he will be an arrogant strutting man shouting old slogans and expecting people to salute. But the slogans will have been proven empty and dishonest by then. That is, by 2004. The proof is in the results, and Bush's results stink.
