CSPAN -townhall meeting with Chris Shays. Most of his constituents are opposed to the war. And as you can see, this audience is not young lefties, but middle aged and even senior citizens. Is Oliver North going to lead the new government in Iraq? Someone attended a meeting where he said that.
Contrary to media reports, 70% of constituents in Shays Connecticut region are opposed to the war.(the poll is still available on Shays website.) I never believed the media polls showing overwhelming or even majority support for war.

US armed forces (all branches) concede that they have a serious problem with Arabic linguist support. Takes about 15 months just to graduate the basic "Level 1" proficiency (vs. 7 months for most other languages). At any given time there are about 500 in the Arabic program, of which around 350 typically graduate. Many of them don't stay in the military when their stint is up (more lucrative opportunities for their skills in other public and private service).

"Wonderful idea, but you'd think they would have found someone who could speak the language properly..."

I would think that the broken Arabic would actually be more effective than a polished native speaker. That way they know it's coming from an American.

We aren't exactly famous for speaking foreign languages.
