Are you kidding? If you want my opinion on this situation, you will have to beat it out of me!

I wasn’t looking for opinions on the situation “on the ground” in Jolo; I wouldn’t be that unfair. I was interested in opinions on what’s going on in Washington, specifically on these two questions:

1. Why, really, are we doing this? Is the Abu Sayyaf really that important in the administration’s calculations, or is there some other agenda?

2. Why are spokespeople in DC making comments that are raising havoc in Manila and threatening Philippine support for the operation? Is this just stupidity on an epic scale, or is there some bizarre logic to it?

I wish it was circulated at DOD. Or better yet, printed in Atlantic, New Yorker, or Harpers. I am sure you have some version of it circulating.

I don’t, actually; it was written purely as an SI post, albeit one that got well out of hand. I may try to get it around a bit.
