Yes, grass and grain fields. They were raising the chicks to turn them loose. In the wild a lot of the chicks don't make it to maturity.

There weren't any pheasants in the US until Judge Denny imported them from China to Oregon in the late 1800s. It took two shipments, the first was eaten by the crew on the way over.
