We do both want UN support for the war. But I'm not willing to do nothing in its absence.

Hopefully it will be forthcoming soon. A deadline is approaching. Blix gave Saddam till March 1 to agree to destruction of the al-Samoud missile system. So far he's sounding like he'll refuse. Assuming he does, I would give the international antiwar movement credit for giving him the courage to think he can defy the UN inspectors.

Unlike Germany, Saddam does not have an industrialized population behind him. He rules by fear and intimidation. He's lost a good chunk of his country to the Kurds. He is being bombed along two no-fly zones by bombers. The imports to the country are limited. And this country is like 30's Germany?

You assume the no-fly zones and sanctions will continue indefinately. They won't. The same forces opposing war also oppose sanctions and the no-fly zones. With the possession of nukes, Saddam will be able to rule the Persian Gulf which has 65% of world oil reserves.

I see no evidence Bush is going or trying to get out of the Iraq confrontation in any other way except by getting rid of Saddam. And eventually that will happen, I'm confident.
