I asked him if he knew how far Chicago was from me and he replied it didn't look far on the map. I said look at the scale

I could say the same about some Americans.

I had an experience last summer when I was visiting my family in SE Michigan. A friend, who happened to live in your state, thought it was an easy hop, skip and jump for me to drive over for a visit. It's as if he had no concept of the distance (over 400 miles).
