What makes you think the average American has any say so as to what is exported or imported or agreed upon except after the fact by voting? I'm sure a lot of Americans would not have wanted to loose their jobs to cheap labor and environmental degradation that allow other countries to lure business. They didn't really have a choice any more than these people you are referring to do.

Often, critisizing the US is the only say-so these people have in matters that effect them personally and directly.

That's why we're all pissed at France.. it's the only thing we can do right now ;o)...

an empire??

false.

we are a democratic republic.

a STRONG republic...and with that strength we can indeed project our force if we feel threatened, as we most certainly do, post 9/11.

you've heard the expression "attack the king, you better kill it"

when we were attacked on our sovereign soil on 9/11 and still to THIS DAY labor against islamic extremists who are still preaching fatwas and jihads....

it would be extremely perilous and foolhardy to sit by with idle hands waiting (*hoping against*) for the next attack.

and i think it's really too bad that former allies are putting their domestic and economic interests ahead of stopping the attackers...but they have that right.

so i am not sure what different standard you are referring to, but i believe it is *standard* to act in self defense...and it's a tough row to hoe when the attacks have come at the hands of terrorists and not a sovereign entity...

but you play the hand you are dealt.
