I would put the emphasis on the words "their Creator". Sort of makes it nonspecific regarding which "God", if any at all.


We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

And this was the great and radical idea: the right to rule came from below (the people), not above.

Jefferson was a believer of natural self evident human rights. Man comes with these rights. For government's purposes it doesn't matter where they come from, they're self evident.

As Deism dictated: men were to rule by reason not revelation.
