Alexion Pharmaceuticals Inc.'s (ALXN) second-quarter results beat a Thomson First Call analysts' consensus estimate of a loss of $1.23 a share. The company said it received a milestone payment of $2 million from Procter & Gamble Co. (PG) in the year-ago second quarter. Alexion said second-quarter research and development expenses rose to $19.3 million from $15 million last year. The company reported cash, cash equivalents and marketable securities of about $253 million as of Jan. 31. Alexion expects to report the results of a Phase III Primo-CABG trial and a Phase IIb trial in rheumatoid arthritis patients during the second half of 2003. The company develops products to treat cardiovascular, autoimmune and neurologic diseases caused by the human immune system. Shares of Nasdaq-listed Alexion closed Thursday up 9 cents, or 0.9%, at $10.60. The stock traded at a 52-week low of $9.05 Oct. 25, 2002, and traded at a 52-week high of $36.69 March 22, 2002.
