As an older WW2 vet..........
My father was in the Navy in WW1, his brother was an ambulance driver in France, his wifes brother was gassed in France. One of my sisters husbands was killed on Quadacanal after three months in the service, and another spent 6 months as a German prisoner .
Wars will come along now and then , regardless of all attempts at peace,
Some friendly countries will later become our enemies, and it is really, really great to be on the winning side.
And that is accomplished only by having a strong military.
None of these were ever tortured or treated as human garbage like Saddam treats people who merely chose to disagree with him.
As far as the Adminstrations handling of this affair, I am not displeased with it, and think it has gone swimmingly so far - could have been better but...

1. Taking the issue to the UN and debating WMD's so much leaves absolutely no question in the minds of other leaders ( the public dont count, we are not voting at this time) as to why Saddam must go, with proof that he has longer range missiles than reported, proof he still has gas type warheads on shells, proof that his does not plan to live up to disarming
And 100% agreement that he should disarm or be disarmed by some means
2. The technical developments resulting from this conflict( if there is one) will make us much more capable of dealing with the next one without major civilian casualties. And with minimum loss of Military personnel
As I once posted, we have lost an average of < 300 people in combat during the last three wars
3. The determination of the GWB team in sending 5 Carriers and nearly 200k men to the Gulf, and
mopping up the entire country of Afghanistan merely to chase down two men (OBL and Saddam) is going to
make terrorists think 5 times about what could happen to them ( Yes, I know, it was for more than those reasons, but a person only has one "I" and can easily picture all those guns being pointed at himself)
4. Saddam has made one terrible mistake if he has programmed US cities in those drones as has been reported . When the US Marines get to him, they will take care of the problem promptly
FWIW

>>Raines watch<<

The insularity (pun not intended) of New Yorkers is well known even to readers of the New Yorker. I am thinking of that famous New Yorker cover drawing, can't remember who by, that sort of leaps from East Coast to West Coast with nothing much in between. My favorite local deli has a poster of it, framed. I think most New Yorkers not only get the joke, but appreciate their own take on it, that their low estimation of the worth of "flyover country" is fair.

Interesting to me is that leftists have gleefully deconstructed the process of being a lawyer and a judge, using a theory called Critical Legal Studies. Practicioners are called Crits.

Why haven't the leftist version of crit journalists deconstructed the New York Times yet? Why is it only the right that attempts this?

And, finally, how can Raines be so oblivious?

Raines Lashes Out at Liberal Bias

Take that, Fox News and Washington Times! Back to your Kennel, Sullivan! Reminds me of that old line of Shakespeare. "Methinks he doth protest too much."

Whoever worked up that little blurb about Raines speech is, of course, self indulgent. "lashes." "Disinformation" in quotes. So it's hard to actually know what Raines said, given the possibility of bad quoting, out of context quoting, etc.

But if the following is an accurate quote, then two cheers for Raines:

The most important development of the post-war period among journalists, American journalists, was the acceptance throughout our profession of an ethic that says we report and edit the news for our papers, but we don’t wear the political collar of our owners, or the government, or any political party. It is that legacy we must protect with our diligent stewardship.
