When things turn around ;0) ASML jumps to third place in '02 fab-tool rankings By Mark LaPedus Semiconductor Business News (02/24/03 07:44 p.m. EST)siliconstrategies.com SAN JOSE--Applied Materials Inc. retained the top spot as the largest chip-equipment vendor in 2002, but ASML Holding NV jumped two places and emerged as the world's biggest lithography supplier last year, according to the new "top 10" rankings among fab-tool makers in 2002. The new rankings were published by VLSI Research Inc. here today (See top 10 rankings below). The rankings were impacted by the ongoing and severe downturn in the chip-equipment business. For example, Japanese ATE giant Advantest Corp., which was ranked in 10th place in terms of sales in 2001, fell off the top 10 rankings last year, according to VLSI Research. In total, the worldwide semiconductor equipment sales fell to $29.8 billion in 2002, compared with $39.3 billion of equipment shipments in 2001, according to VLSI Research. The downturn didn't change the rankings of the top two companies. U.S.-based Applied was in first place in the rankings, with $5.08 billion in terms of sales for the 2002 calendar year. Meanwhile, Japan's Tokyo Electron Ltd. remained in second place, with $2.65 billion in sales last year, according to the San Jose-based research firm. But in a major move, Dutch-based lithography giant ASML jumped from fifth place in 2001, to third in 2002, with $1.88 billion in sales last year, according to VLSI Research. ASML also become the largest lithography producer in 2002, topping archrival Nikon Corp. for the first time ever, according to VLSI Research. U.S.-based KLA-Tencor remained in fourth place in the rankings in 2002, but Nikon fell from third to fifth place, with an estimated $1.09 billion in sales for calendar year 2002, according to the research firm. Japan's Canon Inc. remained in sixth place, while Novellus Systems Inc. of the U.S. jumped from eighth to seventh place. Japan's Dainippon Screen Co. Ltd. fell from seventh to eighth, while U.S.-based Lam Research Corp. cracked the top 10, by jumping from 11th place in 2001, to ninth in 2002. Hitachi Ltd.'s semiconductor unit fell from ninth place in 2001, to tenth in 2002, according to the rankings. Geographically, U.S. suppliers had $8.06 billion in combined revenues in 2002, and had the biggest market share in the top 10 rankings with 50.7%, according to VLSI Research Inc. The combined sales of the top five Japanese companies were $5.95 billion, with 37.5% share of the top ten in 2002. ASML, the only European manufacturer in the top ten, accounted for 11.8%.
