But, it was mainly about using the invasion as a pretext to permenantly station troops in the oil-rich Persian Gulf. But, was it avoidable in the first place?!? I say YES. Iraq threatened to invade Kuwait in the early 1960s and Britian prevented them from doing so by sending troops. Saddam had been saber-rattling over Kuwait for months before he invaded in 1990. We knew he was amassing troops on the border with Kuwait. Why didn't we send troops before he invaded to prevent an invasion? Our ambassador told him we don't take sides in arab-arab disputes. The whole story regarding Iraqi troops taking babies from incubators was a fabrication of a PR firm. The Bush Admin's claims that Iraq was amassing troops on the border with Saudi Arabia was proven false by Russian intelligence. The Gulf War was all about controlling the world's OIL rich ME. And, NO it did not make this country a safer place to live for the average American. I predicted back in 1991 when the Gulf War happened that the arabs would get back at us by bombing New York or some other major American city. Well, it didn't take them long to do so. The 1993 WTC attack soon followed and of course the events of 9/11/01 had a lot to do with the fact OBL was infuriated that the U.S. has troops in the holy land of SA. Shouldn't your concern by your and your family's safety, not the liberation of Kuwait? Mine is. There are plenty of ruthless dictators in the world which have invaded other countries. Some of which the U.S. has installed and supported (including Saddam, he was our friend in the 1980s). Where was the U.S. when China invaded Tibet? Or when Indonesia invaded East Timor? Nowhere, because there wasn't any oil there. So, NO. I'm not convinced that Gulf War 2 will make this country a safer place to live. It could enrage other arabs and cause more terrorist attacks. If the U.S. was really concerned about going after a country with WMD and one that has a track record of selling weapons and weapons technology to other countries, we'd go after North Korea. Maybe not militarily, but diplomaticly in a big way. I think it was a BIG MISTAKE for Bush to abandon diplomacy with N. Korea when he took office. We're now seeing the fruits (rotten) of that policy.
